| MEAD | ||
| The process of brewing mead involves converting honey into alcohol. The three types I will be focusing on will be short, melomel, and cyser. Short mead is considered to be a basic mead and that was where I started learning how to brew mead. Melomel is a flavored mead, usually in the form of fruit juice. And cyser is a mead from biblical times that is a cross between short mead and hard cider. | ||
| The Process | ||
| The basic process of brewing mead starts
with gathering together some basic ingredients. They include: Water (spring water is recomended) Honey (any flavor can be used, I used clover honey from the grocery store) Yeast (brewing yeast is preferred, but baking yeast can be used) Lemon or Lime juice (I used camden tablets) In addition, a yeast nutrient can be used to help the yeast work. I used what came in the kit I bought. (see pic1) Also, some type of container needs to be used for the fermenting process. I bought a brewing kit, which included a food grade 5 gallon bucket with lid (see pic2). it is also recommended that a secondary vessel be used for the secondary fermenting process. I used the "Better Bottle" that came with the kit (see pic3). |
